In 1911, Richard Rodgers — an Irish immigrant who built the Capitol Hotel, the first in downtown Houston, and shaped the neighborhood now known as Sunset Heights — laid claim to 23,000 acres northwest of Austin. In those days the ranch ran along the Colorado River. Today it overlooks the north shore of Lake Travis.

In the early 1980s the land was divided among five branches of the Rodgers family. The 1,575 acres here remained with the Penn family, Richard's great-grandchildren, until recently.

This is the highest ground in the county. The view runs fifty miles in clear weather, across open Hill Country and down to the water. On nearly every side, the ranch is bordered by the 33,000 acres of the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge — a horizon that stays exactly as it is.

Four generations kept this place whole. Sunset Ranch Lago Vista, LLC now carries that forward, with the same intent: to honor what the Rodgers family built and protect what they left behind.
